Although
built in the late 17th century in traditional country house
style, Coxell House is surprisingly well adapted to accommodate
guests with moderate mobility problems.
On arrival,
temporary parking for access is usually available outside the
front door.
Overnight
parking is on a newly developed, level hard standing area to
the side of the house in front of our garage.
The front
path is accessed by descending two steps, 8” and 11” deep, from
pavement level. This is easy walking on stable bricks, laid
uniformly, and just a few feet to the front door.
Headroom
inside on the ground floor is limited to 6 feet, with a 5’ 10”
maximum at the split level division between guest lounge and
breakfast area. Care should be exercised when stepping down
as the edge of the pine flooring is not obviously apparent.
The three
guest bedrooms are on the first floor. Fortunately the staircase
was constructed in the Georgian period, customarily wide with
8 shallow (6”) steps to the first landing and a further four
similar steps on a 180 degree return to the bedroom level. A
sturdy wooden banister provides a good, solid handhold on the
left when ascending the stairs. Again, headroom is limited at
the entrance to the bedroom level – this time to 5’6”.
Once
inside the double and twin rooms, headroom is not a problem.
Each room has full en suite facilities in the form of toilet,
washbasin and shower cubicle. The shower/toilet in the single
room is accessed via a 4” sill, the en suite in the twin room
via a 4” step and a further 9” step up into the shower cubicle.
The shower cubicle in the double room has a 9” sill.
Lighting
throughout is considered above average and either meets or exceeds
industry standards.
Hopefully
the foregoing will serve to assist prospective guests with mobility
problems in a decision to stay at Coxell House, where Maggie
and Robin will endeavour to help wherever possible. For further
