Take time out to
spend a while in Lydd itself, one of the larger towns on the Marsh dating
from Saxon times. The name "Hlyda" was found in a Saxon charter
dating from the 8th century.
Lydd became a limb of
the Cinque Port of New Romney when Henry VIII required the townspeople to
provide ships and men for his use.
Today the centrepiece
of the town is All Saints Church. In the impressive graveyard are buried
Lt. Thomas Edgar who was Captain Cook's companion on his round-the-world
voyage, and many smugglers. The architecture of Lydd reflects its
colourful past and little has changed in recent history.
